Features of Shimanto Hinoki Cypress

Shimanto Hinoki cypress grows larger and stronger the further south it goes, where photosynthesis is more active.
Kochi Prefecture experiences very strong winds, which causes the wood to develop a higher oil content to maintain its elasticity and withstand the wind.

Leveraging these characteristics, Tosa Ryu's cutting boards are rich in natural oils, offering excellent antibacterial and antifungal properties. They also drain water well, dry quickly, and are very durable.

The Right Wood for the Right Purpose

Historically, wood has been utilized based on its inherent properties, such as using cherry wood for flooring and cedar for exterior walls. Hinoki cypress, with its high oil content, is ideal for products used in wet environments, while cherry wood's fine grain makes it suitable for washboards that can clean clothes without damaging them. Chestnut wood is heat-resistant, and camphor wood is suitable for products that utilize its insect-repellent properties against pests that damage clothing. Tosa Ryu creates products that harness these wood characteristics.

Natural Drying

Drying lumber using artificial methods like desiccants not only diminishes the wood's natural functions but also, as has become known in recent years, can expose people to harmful substances from preservatives.

Tosa Ryu employs natural drying methods that take 3 to 6 months. This process ensures that the wood retains its original functions, resulting in safe products that preserve the wood's inherent qualities.

Our Commitment

We have continuously produced products using thinned wood and scraps from Shimanto Hinoki cypress. By thinning forests, we contribute to healthier forests and cleaner rivers, activating the forest's role in absorbing CO2. Simultaneously, by utilizing the resulting thinned wood to create and market wooden products, we engage in green activities known as carbon offsetting.

Furthermore, by using local Shimanto Hinoki cypress, we minimize the extra energy required for long-distance transportation. We strive to reduce waste as much as possible by reusing by-products from manufacturing, such as scraps and leaves, as well as collected wood and driftwood, thereby suppressing new CO2 consumption.
